Sky Thrasher by kylewright Sky Thrasher by kylewright
Yesterday offered an interesting evening of chasing storms! The dry line (colder, dry air) moved into Oklahoma in the afternoon and began producing super cell thunderstorms as the air collided with the warm, moist air in the early evening as it diagonally crossed the state. In this shot, you can see the band of clouds as it blocked out the sun, as well as two developing thunderstorms-one close to the center of the panorama and the other, more mature thunderstorm to the right of the picture. The lesser developed storm melded into the more mature storm, which produced a lowering wall cloud that had several of the weather stations concerned. This prominent band of clouds is the warm, moist air feeding into the thunderstorm, which then forces the moisture upward. This upward, spiraling air and moisture eventually cools and condenses the the water vapor into water droplets (rain) and into hail once it reaches the upper atmosphere. Once night came, this storm produced an amazing lightning show with an almost constant amount of lightning flashes.

Absolutely stunning - the lines in the blue sky and dramatic effect of the sunny blue sky above the ground and the dark cloud looming above really make this photo! Welldone on the composition too!

This makes me think of a couple of things. Truly a great capture of atmosphere. This sort of thing is hard to see from the central part of Missouri where I reside. In one respect it makes me think of a fish of the legends coming down from the heavens and kissing the earth to perhaps grant a wish to some special child of purity. In the other is a fairly twilight minded thought as if to see the moon bright from the night but on the expanse of day. I mean this in regards to the large white nearly spherical shape. I like clouds :)

Thank ya! Did you get a lot of shots during the daylight hours? I think the particular storm I was chasing either produced a tornado and/or straight line winds after nightfall, which I had already stopped and went home. They are potentially projecting some more storms in northwestern Oklahoma this afternoon/evening, so I'm debating if it will be fruitful to pursue...

Most of mine were daylight... chasing into a metro area after dark isnt always the best plan lol.
